South American cuckoos mimic teeth chattering of wild hogs. A species of cuckoo appears to have learned how to use its beak to mimic the teeth chattering of wild pig- like animals called peccaries in order to ward off predators. The ground cuckoo, found in forests in Central and South America, often follow herds of peccaries to feed on the insects disturbed as they walk through leaf litter. Scientists have spotted that the birds use their beaks to sound like the teeth clacks the peccaries make to scare away large predatory cats. DRUMMING COCKATOOS Last week, scientists found that parrots can use sticks to create drumming music in a similar way to humans. Wild palm cockatoos were filmed using sticks and seed pods to create rhythmic sounds as part of a complex mating ritual which also includes screeching, head bobbing and blushing, according to researchers.

Parrots are the first wild animals known to purposefully use tools to make sound, proving that they are highly intelligent, the researchers said. To study the sounds made by the birds, scientists from the Federal University of ABC in São Paulo, Brazil, analysed the bird's chattering alongside the hogs' teeth clacking. They compared these sounds with the beak clacking made by roadrunners, a close relative of the ground cuckoo. The researchers speculated that the ground cuckoo would sound more like the roadrunner because they are closely related, but their study found the opposite to be true.'The acoustic characteristics are more similar to the teeth clacking of peccaries,' study lead author Dr Cibele Biondo told New Scientist.'Cuckoos may deceive predators by making it appear that peccaries are present when they are not.'Other experts have suggested that the two species may have independently developed the sounds in response to something in their shared environment.

Professor Dave Gammon at Elon University in North Carolina told New Scientist the sounds could be the result of convergent evolution, rather than mimicry.'It will be interesting to see what additional evolutionary insights are made,' he said. Dr Biondo and her team said that the mimicry could be the two species teaming up to protect one another. Scientists have spotted that the birds use their beaks to sound like the teeth clacks the peccaries (pictured) make to scare away large predatory cats. While the birds stay on guard in the high forest canopy, the peccaries act as the muscle, warding off smaller attackers. The ground cuckoo's bizarre mimicry is not the first strange bird behaviour discovered this year. Last week, scientists found that parrots can use sticks to create drumming music in a similar way to humans.

Wild palm cockatoos were filmed using sticks and seed pods to create rhythmic sounds as part of a complex mating ritual which also includes screeching, head bobbing and blushing, according to researchers. And the findings may shed light on why humans first started making music, they added. Last week it was revealed that palm cockatoos can use sticks to create drumming music in a similar way to humans (cockatoo pictured right is demonstrating the behaviour)WHY DO PARROTS MAKE MUSIC? The music was made by male cockatoos as part an elaborate courtship display to attract females, Professor Heinsohn said. Professor Ron Heinsohn told Mail.

Online: 'Drumming is part of a complex courtship display by males to females to entice the females to lay their egg in his nest hollow.'They combine many different calls, including screeches and whistles, with movements, head bobbing and wing raising, and they also 'blush' their red cheeks when sexually excited.'The drumming and rhythm seems to be an extra component designed to impress the females further.'It seems it is important to be rhythmic but also to have an individual signature that is theirs alone.'Parrots are the first wild animals known to purposefully use tools to make sound, proving that they are highly intelligent, the researchers said. Professor Rob Heinsohn, a conservation biologist from Australian National University, told Mail. Online: 'Quite a few animals use tools, far fewer manufacture them themselves.'It's the latter category that get scientists most excited as it implies higher level cognitive processes akin to our own. 'And tool- use in the animal world is virtually always in the context of foraging, such as extracting insects, or crushing a hard seed case.'Palm cockatoos are highly unusual because they make specific tools (two different types in fact, the drumstick and the seedpod) for the purposes of display and courtship.' In the study, the researchers filmed 1. Australia for seven years. They recorded the birds drumming with self- made tools, beating sticks or hard seed pods against a tree. The music was made by male cockatoos as part an elaborate courtship display to attract females, Professor Heinsohn said.
